Case Studies at UC Riverside:
The following three stories are interviews that were held by students with other community members in the University of California, Riverside.
The questions that guided this discussion include:
- How is white supremacy and hetero-normativity reproduced within the university system such as administrative bodies/departments/classrooms/etc.?
- How does discourse of inclusion work to maintain and rehabilitate white supremacy and hetero-patriarchal structure?
- What are your ideas on the institution's diversity initiatives/programs at UCR? How effective are such programs in critically engaging white supremacy, hetero-normativity, racism, gender oppression, etc.?
- Is it possible to critically engage these forms of oppression through institutional programs? Why or why not?
- At the same time, what are the possibilities to actually teach and create new intersectional discourses (about white supremacy, hetero-normativity, racism, gender oppression)? Is there a way to move beyond inclusion within the UC system and/or other higher education institutions through a rhetoric of "diversity"?
- Also, moving beyond the university bubble, how is the work outside of the institution (including yourself!) doing to create healing spaces that combat these issues?
The interviewed include:
- Staff Member at UC Riverside
- Student, Queer People of Color
- Faculty Member at UC Riverside
